Explore Cape Town

Table Mountain, Cable Car, City Views, Most Beautiful City In The World

Table Mountain

Table Mountain sits at the centre of the city's skyline like punctuation, a flat sandstone plateau three kilometres long, formed from rock laid down before there were trees on earth. It is the backdrop to everything else Cape Town does, and the first place most visitors look up at when they arrive.

The cableway has climbed the north face since 1929, though today's slowly rotating cars are a considerably gentler proposition than the originals. The ride takes just under five minutes. What waits at 1,086 metres is less a viewpoint than a small world of its own. Go on a clear morning, and leave before the wind picks up; the cableway closes when it does.

Cape Vinelands, franschhoek wine tram, Wine

Cape Winelands

Forty-five minutes east of the city, the highway gives way to Cape Winelands, that have been producing wine since 1659, and the two towns at their heart, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, were founded by Dutch settlers and French Huguenots respectively, each leaving their fingerprints on the architecture, the food, and the names above half the cellar doors.

The Franschhoek Wine Tram is the easiest way to see the valley without choosing a designated driver an open-sided carriage that loops between estates, stopping for as long as you like at each. Go midweek if you can; the weekends here belong to Capetonians, and they take them seriously.

African Penguins, Boulders Beach, Simons Town, Cape Town

Boulders Beach

Forty minutes south of the city, the coast road bends into Simon's Town and on to Boulders, a sheltered cove framed by granite outcrops 540 million years in the making. What makes it unforgettable is what lives between the rocks: a colony of African penguins, settled here since 1982, when just two breeding pairs arrived from the mainland and decided to stay.

The boardwalk above Foxy Beach lets you watch them up close, preening, arguing, waddling between the boulders with all the dignity of small commuters. At Boulders itself you can swim within a few metres of them, one of the few places on earth where that's possible. Go early; the light is softer and the crowds thinner.
